Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

by Max Moseley

If you are interested in natural cures, natural beauty remedies or basic preventative medicine, then you simply must have a bottle of apple cider vinegar in your kitchen and bathroom. Apple cider vinegar is inexpensive, readily available and comes with a host of health and beauty benefits. The list of benefits is so extensive in fact, that entire books have been written about the many uses of apple cider vinegar (ACV).

It is important to note that there is a very distinct difference between the clear vinegar you find in your grocery store and raw, unfiltered and un-distilled apple cider vinegar. The vinegar you buy in a grocery store has been extensively processed to create a clear, more saleable product, but unfortunately has lost most of its health benefits in the process. Raw, unfiltered ACV will be cloudy or murky and have filaments floating in it which is known as “the mother” and means that the vinegar still contains it’s miraculous health giving properties, enzymes and nutrients that pasteurization and processing destroy.

Some of the many nutrients that ACV contains are calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium and phosphorous. ACV also contains pectin which reduces cholesterol, lowers blood pressure and eases constipation. The potassium in ACV provides better hair, teeth and nails, prevents cramps and helps detox the body. The antioxidants in ACV also provide a host of anti aging and disease fighting benefits. Many people take ACV daily and have lowered their cholesterol levels more than they ever did with dangerous statin drugs. The malic acid in ACV is anti fungal and anti bacterial and also helps remove uric acid from the body which helps to alleviate joint pain and arthritis. The manganese, magnesium, silicon and calcium in ACV helps to maintain bone mass and prevent osteoporosis.

Users of ACV report that it has reduced or eliminated their allergies, skin conditions and acne, flu, candida, acid reflux, arthritis, gout and more. Other people that take ACV every day, swear that their skin and hair has never looked better. Many people take ACV daily as part of their anti-aging beauty regime.

Another notable benefit of ACV is weight loss because it helps break down fat, controls blood sugar levels and helps stabilize appetite. Many people claim that their weight began to drop off with daily intake of ACV. In addition to losing weight more easily, many advocates claim a significant increase in energy as well.

ACV is safe for pregnancy, can help reduce acid reflux, morning sickness and leg cramps and is an excellent way to obtain additional food based vitamins and minerals for proper fetal development. Some people also believe that it can help prevent varicose veins when taken internally or applied externally as a poultice. ACV is also believed to assist the body’s blood clotting ability so taking ACV daily while pregnant may help to prevent hemorrhage during childbirth.

Due to the fact that ACV has anti bacterial, anti fungal and anti viral qualities, taking ACV daily may help you from catching colds or flus that are passed around by improving your immune system and you may also be able to reduce the severity of the illness by bumping up your daily ACV dose after the onset of symptoms. Some even believe that taking large, frequent and regular amounts of ACV can reduce the viral load of HIV patients.

There are many ways to take ACV. The standard ACV cocktail is simply one to two tablespoons of raw ACV with one to two tablespoons of raw honey in a glass of water up to three times daily. Ted from recommends taking two tbsp of ACV with some baking soda in a large glass of water 1-3 times a day for five days and then taking two days off. He recommends this solution to manage the PH level in your body without becoming too acidic from the ACV. Other people use ACV to rinse their hair, wash their face, add it to their bath or they use it for enemas or douches. The easiest way to incorporate ACV into your routine is to use ACV and oil in lieu of store bought salad dressings.

The only real drawback to be aware of when drinking undiluted vinegar is that the acid can be harsh on your teeth and may begin to destroy tooth enamel. To avoid damaging your dental enamel, dilute the vinegar in water, drink your ACV cocktail within five to ten minutes to minimize time spent in contact with your teeth, add baking soda to help neutralize the acid, rinse with plain water or gently brush your teeth after drinking your ACV cocktail to help remove the acid from your teeth. You should also skip the apple cider vinegar tables which may not even contain apple cider vinegar and may cause other health complications.

If you are looking for a safe, natural, inexpensive way to a more youthful body, easier weight loss, improved immune system, healthier blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, improved detoxification, energy, digestion and healthy skin, hair and joints then why not give a daily ACV cocktail a try? Virtually everyone can benefit in some way from apple cider vinegar, there are no known side effects from it and you cannot overdose on it. Most people need more vitamins and minerals, not less so the more ways you choose to take apple cider vinegar the better.

  1. Where can I find the apple vinegar
that has not been processed. The
article refers to it as the “Mother” Apple Cider.

  2. @Gigi Malone:

You can usually find raw, unfiltered ACV in most health food stores. Any ACV in commercial grocery stores will not contain “the mother”. Read the label and look specifically for the words ‘raw’ and ‘unfiltered’. You should also check the bottom of the bottle for sediment and cobweb type “floaties” (the mother). If you would like to order online, you can order from

  3. I have heard something about apple vinegar before, but I dont think it is so useful to our health. Everyone must have it in the kitchen, and I will also buy it.

  4. I’ve heard much about apple cider vinegar ability to help reduce weight. It would be especially useful for most women (who are nervous at the idea of losing weight). My friend used the following recipe as a diet supplement: one tablespoonful of apple cider vinegar diluted in a glass (7 ounces) of water on an empty stomach. She lost 4 kg a month. So it really works. But you should necessarily dilute it with water – it won’t lose its abilities – and thus you’ll protect your stomach.

  6. I have had family members who have used Apple Cider Vinegar for gout, and it works (quite quickly I might add!) within about 10 minutes, probably the time it takes to absorb into their system. And yes, they used Bragg’s brand (with the ‘mother’). If you can’t get Bragg’s, then try to find a similr ‘organic’ one. Interesting you mentioned it’s great for skin too. Will have to try it for that.

  9. An unprocessed vinegar mean more chances of impurities contained in apple cider vinegar! wouldn’t it be more harmful to our healths?

    Posted by Thomas | April 20, 2009, 8:16 am
  10. @Thomas@FastSize Scam:

The processing makes apple cider clear for better appearance on store shelves. Unprocessed ACV is extremely healthy but can be cloudy in appearance and have filaments, the mother and sediment which is not appetizing for modern consumers.

  17. I started breaking out on my face a couple of years ago – the best skin care products failed to work( I spent a lot of money on products which did not work)

Then I started taking ACV (diluted in water) every night before going to bed (been taking it for two months now). I am happy to report my skin is clear – very clear. People have given me compliments on how “perfect” my skin looks.

    Just wanted to share this.

  22. ACV is excellent i have heard. To treat GERD, you can change your diet as well. One can avoid foods and medications that lower LES tone (fats and chocolate) and foods that may irritate the damaged lining of the esophagus (citrus juice, tomato juice, and probably pepper), for one.

  23. Very interesting article. I honestly wasn’t aware apple cider vinegar could benefit the body in so many ways! Really, really interesting stuff.

I find it really funny that products are processed these days for the sole reason that they look better on store shelves. It really makes me laugh, it’s incredible that people would actually rather something look appealing and have less health benefits, that have something that looks less appealing and has more health benefits.

That is a great question. I would love to know the answer as well.

    • processed ACV has been washed from its therapeutic benefits, moreover, you will see that it is not pure ACV – it has added ingredients (you can see the label) and brands like american garden has on their label 5%, even if the dosage will be doubled, there is no maximum benefit at all…unprocessed/unfiltered/organic/with the mother — all the therapeutic benefits of ACV is there.

  26. Apple cider vinegar will help improve your metabolism, enhances your digestion, and cleans your body when consumed before meals. Take a couple of tablespoons diluted with a glass of water everyday. A different method you can also use is to consume it as a healthy salad dressing rather than those commercial salad dressings found on the market.

My question is, doesn’t it increase the amount of acid in your body? Unless it becomes alkali once in the stomach. something like lemons.

  50. I’m sorry, but this post is dangerously under-informed.

“there are no known side effects from it and you cannot overdose on it”

Apple cider vinegar may be a healthy product, aid in weight loss and reduce cholesterol, but it is not recommended for those on insulin and heart medication, low potassium, osteoporosis, stomach ulcers or severe acid reflux. Taking too much ACV can cause ulcers, potassium deficiencies, diarrhea and heightened levels of acid in the blood (potentially deadly).

So yeah, it’s a great supplement. Taken in small doses and combined with a healthy diet, water intake and exercise it can really improve your health. But telling people there are no ill effects and they can take as much as they want is just plain stupid and dangerous.

  51. I’ve been drinking regular apple cider thinking that it was helping.. I think I read somewhere that even the normal stuff you get in the store has a little health benefit. Also, like said in the article, try to make little contact with the cider on your teeth. I learned this recently and it’s been ruining my enamel a bit.

  68. There were some concerns in this article and in the comments of ACV making the body to acidic. This is impossible since when it is metabolized it has an alkaline ash, thus raising your ph and making the body more base/alkaline. It is like eating lemons. Note however, that only ACV turns alkaline when metabolized, other vinegars do not. I take the ACV concoction with baking soda, not only because it protects your enamel, but because taking a 1/2 tsp of baking soda with 1/2 a glass of water on an empty stomach has huge health benefits. The athletes at the Beijing Olympics were doing this because it helped reduce the lactic acid build up and improved running and swimming times (they call it soda doping). The benefit list of drinking baking soda is almost as long as the list for ACV. You can see some of the benefits here: and here:
I have to say, since I have been taking baking soda and ACV I have noticed a boost in energy and a steady loss in weight, and I haven’t been trying to loose weight, but who minds shedding a few fatty pounds.
For those concerned about their ph, by some ph test strips at your local health food store.
For those that hate the taste of either of these products, stick with it and in a couple of weeks you will really get use to the taste.

  89. I’ve seen the wonders of apple cider advertised in the paper but it was no where as descriptive as this post. If anything it was more of a sales pitch and just didn’t sound believable, even with the testimonials.

After reading this post I’m going to see if my local health shop has it, and I’m going to remember to dilute it with water. Actually the ACV, water and honey cocktail sounded quite good.

  90. I used to take apple cider vinegar when I first switched to a cleaner diet.

Back in the days, my main goal was to clean up and clear candida.

I was never too sure if ACV was very good until I saw it being used in a detox resort in Italy with lemon water (squeezed lemon and water).

If you can deal with the taste, enjoy…If not lemon water is also a great choice to clean up your system from my experience

  98. I have had a skin rash that no doctor, dermatologist, or allergist could help with. After a year and a half of prescription drugs that did not make it go away I ran across an article for ACV. I immediately went out and bought some thinking I was simply not going to spend another spring season itching and I would try anything. UNBELIEVABLE! My rash had completely disappeared after less than a week of drinking the ACV cocktail once a day. I am a believer and will continue to drink ACV forever if it keeps away itchy skin!

No more pills, no more Tums which actually do more damage than good. I have not taken ACV for about a year now and still have not suffered heartburn once since stopping. I am actaully going to go back on the daily regime of ACV to help lose a little weight. I’ll try and post back after a month or so and see how it’s helped. I’m 6’2″ and weigh 235 lbs On Feb 29, 2012. Lets see if it really helps with the weight loss. I eat reasonably healthy and don’t drink too much liquor, but still have trouble getting the weight down. It will be interesting to see as I won’t be changing my diet. Will let you know. Happy ACV to all.
